Question:How can I incorporate backgrounds from different sources, like my personal photographs, to use as a background in my lessons?

  • Submitted By:

Answer:
Inserting backgrounds into your lessons directly from your saved pictures is so easy! With MimioStudio open, choose Insert-Background-Image. Browse for the picture you want, and open it. At this point, you can also choose how you want the picture placed, and whether it is to go on one page or on all pages of the lesson. Click OK, and the picture becomes the background of your page.

You can also save your favorites in your Gallery for ease of retrieval. With the Gallery open, click on New Folder in the toolbar. This will open a folder, which you can name anything you like. To save pictures to this folder, choose Insert File from the Gallery toolbar. Choose your picture, and it will appear in the Gallery folder. This method will keep all your favorites in one place for future use.

Question:

I recently attended a Mimio Quicklearn live training session and it was fantastic! The instructor demonstrated several different interactive map activities from the MimioStudio Gallery. I would love to use the same activities with my students.

Could you please let me know how I can find those map activities within my MimioStudio Gallery?

Answer:

Thank you fo such an excellent question!

The maps you are seeking can be found on MimioConnect within an .mcf file titled "Map Gallery." To download the Map Gallery, login to MimioConnect profile and click on the following link: http://www.mimioconnect.com/content/lesson/map_gallery. At the bottom of the page, click on the downloads link to download the file. The file will then be uploaded to your computer.

Once the file is on your computer, double click on the icon to import the file into in your MimioStudio Gallery. The file and all of its amazing maps will now become part of your Gallery.

To search for the maps and any other content within the MimioStudio Gallery, please do the following:

1. Open your MimioStudio Gallery using the Gallery icon on your Mimio Tools or in
the bottom right hand corner of your MimioStudio Notebook.

2. Within the Gallery, click on the folder labeled "Gallery" to highlight all of
the Gallery content within the Gallery folder. You can also search
sub-folders within the Gallery by clicking on them.

3. Next, in the search box at the top of the Gallery application, type in the
content that you are looking for, in this case "Maps." You can also refine
your search and search for something like "United States Maps." Your
MimioStudio Gallery will now search though all of your content using keywords
attached to each Gallery item.

4. Your search results will be promptly displayed in the bottom half of the
Gallery window. For example, you should now see a folder titled "Maps."

5. Finally, drag and drop maps content from the MimioStudio Gallery into your
MimioStudio Notebook to use them interactively in your classroom.

Question:

My stylus tip is sticking and not writing properly on the board. What can be done?

  • Submitted By:

Answer:

What a good question. The stylus tip can wear down with repeated use but can be replaced so that you can get the smooth, gliding action back again. The replacements should have come in a small plastic bag in the box with the Mimio bar. No worries though if you can't find the box or the extra ones. You just need to simply contact our customer service by following this link: http://www.mimio.com/en-NA/Support/CustomerService.aspx and explain your situation. You are wondering how to search for content created by a specific member which is very easy to do! If you select “Members” from the menu bar on the MimioConnect home page and then scroll down about halfway to the bottom and you should see “Search Members” on the right hand side. Simply search for the user you are looking for and once you find them click on their name. On the right hand side you should see a “Members Profile” box with a green border. Click on “Lesson Plans and Activities” and you will find all lessons created by that user.

Question:

I have updated my software to the latest version. Now, when I use the Mimio toolbar there is no camera icon for the screen clipping tool. I can access it from the drop down menu under INSERT in the notebook but has it been taken out of the toolbar?? It makes it hard to screen clip outside of the notebook if I'd just have the toolbar open on my desktop.

  • Submitted By:
    Sue C.
  • Date:

Answer:

You are so right! It would be hard to screen clip outside the notebook if access to this valuable tool was taken off the toolbar. It isn't gone, just a part of another icon on the toolbar. The Insert icon. This is the icon to the right of the new and improved look of the eraser tool! The screen clipping tool now has a few new features for a more, accurate clipping. You can do the original rectangular clip but now have the choice of an oval, whole page or shape specific clip as well. Enjoy using these new features for creating more engaging lessons. Don't forget to check out the Ask a Master section of MimioConnect for additional tips and suggestions! Thanks for writing in.

Question:

Do you know of some ways to pair eBooks with my Mimio?

  • Submitted By:
    Kate B.
  • Date:
    Jun. 9, 2012

Answer:

This is a great question because eBooks are becoming a very accessible and cost effective way to deliver traditional textbooks and literature that was only available in print form. Many eBooks can be downloaded into a pdf format which allows you to insert them into notebook pages. Once inserted here's a list of just a few suggestions of what you can do:
1. Highlight text for discussion or analyzing
2. Select specific words for vocabulary development/ definitions
3. Locate passages which answer/support essential ideas or themes of the story.
4. Read aloud passages for gaining fluency and comprehension
5. Insert graphic organizer pages for character traits and/or comparisons, plot development, 5 W’s, and related skills.
6. Insert notebook pages where pictures can be sketched to explain a passage.
7. Analyze an author’s style by citing examples.
8. Make predictions by highlighting instances of foreshadowing.
9. Record lesson and class comments for those who were absent or need to use as a study guide for future assessments.
10. Develop/practice research and note-taking skills.
11. Insert video clips, found on the Internet, to bring clarification to complex passages.
12. Analyze and/or interpret charts, graphs, and tables.
Even if an eBook can’t be inserted, project it outside the notebook and develop your lesson incorporating Mimio tools and applications like screen annotation and even quick vote. Don't forget that good teaching practices infusing student centered objectives and engagement are still the focus, so whatever your lesson ideas are, Mimio makes it a better way to learn. As always, we encourage you to check out the other posts on Ask a Master for many more tips and suggestions.
