Question:

How can I ask an opinion question with Mimio Vote? There isn't a "right" answer, and I don't want to have the smile face, check mark etc... to show up denoting a "correct" answer. Thank you for your help!

Answer:

You are asking if it is possible to ask an opinion question using MimioVote - one with no right or wrong answer. Yes, you can! This type of question can quickly and easily be done using the QuickVote feature. You can access QuickVote on the Mimio Tool bar by choosing Applications. Once you have the QuickVote toolbar up, do the following: Choose your class and start polling. When you start polling, you are given answer options - choose the option you want (T/F, AB, etc.) When students have all given their answer/opinion, stop polling. At that point, you are given the opportunity to choose the right answer, or to choose no answer . You can then bring up your question results, which will give you a pie graph of the class answers.

Question:

I have opened a word document and I want to use my Mimio pen to write over it, how do I get the tools to work.

Answer:

Thank you so much for your recent submission to Ask a Master. We are so glad to have you as part of our wonderful online community of educators! You have a question concerning how to use your Mimio pen to write over your open word document. This is very easy to do! On your toolbar there is a button for Screen Annotation which allows you to annotate anything on your screen. To use this, you would want to open the MimioStudio software and have the Mimio toolbar available. By clicking the Screen Annotation button (bottom right button on tool bar), you can freeze the screen and then use any of the other tools on the Mimio toolbar to annotate or draw on the screen. Upon pressing the Annotation button, you will hear a camera shutter clicking noise and a green border will go around your screen. Your screen will be "frozen" allowing you to use the Mimio stylus and any tools to circle, highlight, draw, etc anywhere on the page you want. Since the screen is frozen, you'll want to make sure it's in position before you go into the Annotation mode. To get out of Annotation mode, simply hit ESC on your keyboard, click the bottom left button (interactive) on the Mimio toolbar, or right click anywhere on your screen and select “close.” The Mimio toolbar can 'float' over any application and you can use the features at will if you are in the Annotation mode. Another great feature of this is that any annotation you make is automatically saved in the Mimio Gallery in the Screen Annotations folder. If you open your Mimio Gallery by pressing the Gallery button on the Mimio tools (third button from the bottom left--looks like a picture frame), you can click on the Screen Annotations folder and bring your annotations right in a Mimio file to continue doing work, review what you did, print, save, etc. Also, if you want to try something different you can easily insert your word document right into MimioNotebook which would allow you to use all of the tools and even add other elements found in the Gallery such as the different reveals in effort to make your document interactive. To insert the file, open MimioNotebook, go to INSERT at the top and then FILE, navigate to the file of your choice and select OPEN. You will notice in the bottom left hand corner of your Notebook that is says “loading document” and soon your word document will appear! You can also insert the file by clicking on the INSERT FILE icon on your toolbar (6th button down on left side) or you can drag/drop the file from its location on your computer directly into MimioNotebook. Here is a video showing you how easy it is to do this:

I hope you find this helpful and please let me know if there is anything else you need as we are always here to help. Have a wonderful day!

Question:

I am having trouble adding a file attachment to a mimio lesson I already created. It won't drag into the file attachment area.

  • Submitted By:

Answer:

Thank you for your recent submission. File attachments are such a valuable addition to the Mimio notebook features allowing teachers to include all those downloadable files which compliment the notebook lesson. You had said that you were having some difficulty attaching them to your lesson. Here are the steps involved:
1. With your notebook lesson open, make sure you have the Tab view (thumbnails of each of the pages) open as well, either to the left or right.
2. In the tab view, click the small folder (grey and yellow) to display the File Attachment pane. This is to the right of the thumbnails icon at the bottom of the tab view pane.
3. With your notebook page still open on your screen, locate the file(s) on your computer or from wherever else that you want to include in the lesson.
4. Once again with the notebook open, underneath your computer files folder opened (which should be minimized so the notebook page is partially exposed with the file attachment pane visible), find the file, click and drag it from its original location to the file attachment pane. You should see a + sign as it gets dropped in.
That is the basic process to use for including files as part of your lessons. As always, check out the Ask a Master section of the MimioConnect website for more valuable tips and suggestions!

Question:

Can I print multiple pages like thumbnails on one sheet of paper?

  • Submitted By:

Answer:

This a good question because there are times when we need to print off our notebook pages to use as references, guide a lesson, or for notetaking and mark ups. You do have an option to print multiple notebook pages on 1 sheet of paper. It is a choice in the "preferences" when you go to click on Print from your notebook menu. It may be a little different from computer to computer but the choice is "Pages per sheet." On some computers it's in the layout tab, or the features tab, or even the advanced tab. This form of printing does give you those smaller versions of the pages, but without the lines. Give it a try and don't forget to check out the rest of the Ask a Master section on the site for other tips and suggestions!

Question:

How do I add a image(s) from Google to my gallery?

  • Submitted By:
    A. Nelson
  • Date:
    Jul. 20, 2011

Answer:

This is one of the features I love about the Mimio gallery - you can find images (or sounds, animations, video clips) you may want to use in lessons, and save them to your gallery. (As with any image or item used from another source, please be aware of Copyright guidelines.) Once in your gallery, these files are there for your immediate use in your lessons.

To save any image to your gallery (from Google or elsewhere), you can use a couple techniques. If you find an image you want to save on your computer as well as in your gallery, simply save that image to your pictures folder on your computer. Make sure you name the image, so it will be easy to find - both on your computer and in your gallery. To insert that picture into your gallery, follow these steps:

While in MimioStudio, open your gallery from your tools menu. Once the gallery is open, locate the folder where you want the image to live. (You can also create a new folder in your gallery for specific images) Click on that folder icon to highlight it. Then, locate the 'Insert File' icon at the top of your gallery. Choose that icon, and you will get a window where you can choose your image file already saved on your computer. Open that image file, and it will be added to the chosen folder in your gallery. The image will be added to the folder, and will automatically be ordered alphabetically by the name you chose for the image when you saved it to your computer.

Another way to add an image to your gallery skips the step of saving the image to your computer. When you locate an image you want in your gallery, but not necessarily one you need to save elsewhere on your computer, you can do a simple copy/paste. While in your browser, right-click on the image you want, and select 'copy image.' Then choose the folder in your gallery where you want that image to live. Click on that folder, and the images in that folder can be seen. Simply right-click in the image area, and select 'paste. Your image is now added to that gallery, but with the name 'New Image.' To change the name to one you want, find the added image (it will be the last one in the folder), and right-click again. Choose Properties, and a window will open where you can name the image and add keywords to help you locate the image in the future. Once again, the image will be in the gallery according to the name given.

Question:

How can I add the self-checking tools to a lesson? IE: the student clicks the correct word and it chimes and is highlighted, or, the reverse, the student clicks the incorrect choice and the buzzer sounds and the words is highlighted in red. Also, from where are the sound effects obtained? Thank you for your kind response.

Answer:

Thank you for your recent submission to Ask a Master. We are so glad to have you as part of our wonderful online community of educators! You asked for help on how to create lessons where your students can see whether their choice was correct or incorrect. We all know that no matter the age, students love the instant feedback. First of all, please make sure that you have the latest version of MimioStudio Notebook Software downloaded on your computer. You can do this by going to:

http://www.mimio.dymo.com/en-US/Support/Downloads.aspx

Your MimioStudio Gallery comes preloaded with some wonderful resources for you to use when creating lessons, including different answer reveals that can make your lessons more interactive for your students. First, open up your Gallery, click on the Gallery folder so that it is highlighted in blue and then enter “reveals” into the search bar at the top. Here you will find various reveals to use in your lessons such as the pop, star pop, color and shade reveals which you can bring into Mimio Notebook and resize to fit over the answer choices. When the students come up and click on the reveal, the answer will be displayed underneath. You can also search the Gallery again for “correct” and you will find various multimedia files such as colored checkmarks, cross areas, along with correct and incorrect answer areas. You can easily drag these invisible answer reveals into Mimio Notebook and resize them to fit over the answer choices. When the students come up and click on an answer it will show them if they are right or wrong instantly! To reset, simply click on the answer again. Your students will love the sound and animation! As part of our new MimioStudio Software, your Gallery comes with wonderful Question Templates that are designed to use with the MimioVote System. However, you can still use the question template if you do not have the MimioVote. To do this, open your Gallery, go to and expand the Questions and Results folder, open up the Questions folder. Now, choose the template you’d like, drag it out into MimioNotebook, resize as needed and add in your question and answer choices and you are ready to go! Left clicking once inside the template will open up the text fields where you can enter the question and answer choices. Click on the circle to the left of the correct answer choice and you will see a green check appear. You can change other settings by clicking on the icon in the lower right hand corner of the template. Once you finish, click outside of the template and it is ready to use. To reveal the correct answer simply click on the blue button at the bottom center of the question template. Also, there are a few other reveal gallery files on MimioConnect that you may like. Simply conduct a search for “reveals” and download the files you like. Now you should be ready to create some amazing lessons that will keep your students fully engaged and provide instantaneous feedback during your lessons!

You are also wondering where to find sound effects to add to your lessons. There are many sound effects that are already in a folder in your Gallery so all you have to do is search for “sound effects” and you will have access to all of them. You also have the option of using any sound effect that you have on your computer or have downloaded. Please remember to search on MimioConnect for sound effects as well as I know there are several .mcf’s that are available for download. I hope this helps and please feel free to contact me with any further questions that you may have. Have a fantastic week!

Question:

How can I delete a folder or sub-folder from the gallery?

  • Submitted By:
    Lynley A
  • Date:
    Jul. 18, 2011

Answer:

This is a good question because depending upon the placement of the folder in the gallery will determine whether or not you could accidentally delete more than what you had intended. To delete a folder, you have a couple of choices depending on whether or not that folder has a plus (+) sign in front of it. If there is plus (+) sign, and you highlight that word and then click on the red X at the top of the galley, you will delete the "main" folder as well as all sub-folders that were embedded in that main folder. If you click on the + sign, it opens the sub-folders and now you can just highlight one or more of those folders to delete them, but the "main folder" stays intact. You should get the question "Are you sure you want to permanently delete the selected item(s)?" when you click on the red X. This gives you one last chance to check what you're deleting before it's too late. Give it a try! For more MimioStudio tips, check out the wide array of Ask a Master questions and answers.

Answer:

Thank you for your recent submission to Ask a Master. We are so glad to have you as part of our wonderful online community of educators! You are wondering how to use a reveal to cover a small answer on your page in Notebook. The reveal that you find on your toolbar cannot be resized and is designed to be used when you are presenting lessons. I like to think of it as the old technique teachers used with overhead projectors where they would use a piece of paper to cover items they didn’t want the class to see and then simply reveal certain information at a time. This tool would be great when you are reading a passage and only want to reveal a line or paragraph at a time (can pull shade up or down) or maybe when using a timeline and want to focus on one event at a time (pull shade to left or right). What I think you are looking for in this case would be found within your Gallery. Also, please search for reveals on MimioConnect as I know there are many wonderful .mcf's to choose from. I hope this was helpful and please let me know if there is anything else you may need. Have a great day!

Question:

How can I write on a pull tab and have the text stay on there when I move the pull off the screen to hide it?

  • Submitted By:
    Roula
  • Date:
    Jul. 11, 2011

Answer:

The enhanced graphic organizers with the pull tabs are a great addition to a teacher's repertoire of resources. You had asked about creating text on the tab and have it stay. What you need to do first is click on the text tool in the Mimio toolbar and then type your text. Second, with the pull tab on the notebook page, place the text box inside the pull. Click on the pull tab to activate the dotted lines around it and then, with the shift key held down, click on the text box to activate it as well. With both items activated, you now want to "group" them by clicking on Format from the menu tabs, then grouping and choose group. The pull tab with the attached text can now be dragged off the screen to remain hidden. It's fairly easy, so give it a try!
